Pear Turnovers

Today isn’t so much about the recipe, but the amazing experience I had this morning in the kitchen… turnovers are easy, we have all been there, done that. But today was different for me. For those that don’t know, here is a little bit of history to fill you in…

My youngest is a non eater, not just your average non-eater, I mean refusing to pass anything between her lips from when I started her on solids at 5 months! It has been a constant battle to say the least! There have been many many doctors and paediatric doctors visits over the years and she is now 3. One of the limited things she will actually eat at the moment is “pie crust” as she calls it. That’s pastry on it’s own…

So this morning, she is watching an episode of Play School on TV and they start making apple turnovers. I casually say, “oh yummy, they are using pie crust”. Next minute I am dragged to the kitchen by her asking if we can make some! At this point I am completely in shock and secretly doing a little happy dance! 🙂

Miss 3 had so much fun making the turnovers, and shock horror, she polished off two in a row. Admittedly she didn’t eat all the pear that was in the middle, but she did eat some of it. Having her excited about it and choosing to make it was wonderful. Just goes to show, inspiration to cook can come from anywhere, getting back to the basics is a good thing, and most of all… it’s fun being in the kitchen with kids!  🙂

Domestic Diva - Pear Turnover


For those who would like my daughters recipe:

All we used was one sheet of puff pastry

1 pear, diced

brown sugar

milk or water

Cut puff pastry into 4 equal squares. Place diced pear on each square and sprinkle with brown sugar. Dab milk or water with your fingers along 2 sides of each square (she had fun doing that, lol) then fold to form a triangle. Press sides together to close and decorate with a fork to make sure that the filling won’t come out. Use your finger to spread more milk or water over the top.

Place on baking tray and bake for approx 15 mins or until lightly browned.

  3. Hi. Love your blog! Discovered it a few months ago when I started the failsafe diet for my family, prompted by troubling behaviour from my 3 year old. Your recipes have made failsafe eating very tasty for us! My 3 year old is a non eater too who would live off pie crust if she could. So hopefully she’ll love the pear turnovers.
